The baby's crying alerted people passing a street in the city of Durban, Monday morning, who called the authorities. A passerby peered into the gutter and saw that the child had gone down the sewer pipe.

Rescuers dug into the pipe where the baby was being held and carefully cut the tube to remove it, said Robert Mckenzie, an emergency team spokesman. According to him, the baby walked about five meters through a narrow tube.

"A newborn was rescued from a gutter on Monday morning, just after 6 am" reads the "Rescue Care" Facebook post, attributed to Garrith Jamieson. "The baby was found and removed by the Durban Fire Department," he added.
